Joshua Gans

Call for Applications

Doctoral Student Workshop on Economics of Artificial Intelligence

Virtual Workshop: September 22, 2021

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), with the generous support of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, will host a workshop for Ph.D. students in economics on topics related to artificial intelligence (AI). The workshop will involve a mix of lectures from leading scholars and student group discussions. It is targeted to students who are beginning or conducting research in this area. The workshop will be organized by NBER affiliates Ajay Agrawal, Joshua Gans, and Avi Goldfarb, of the University of Toronto, and Catherine Tucker of MIT. The goal is to promote research activity on topics related to AI, and to enable graduate students who are working in this area to begin developing a network of like-minded scholars. The programs for past workshops may be found at:
http://conference.nber.org/sched/YSAIf18, http://conference.nber.org/sched/YSAIf19, and
http://conference.nber.org/sched/YSAIf20. Some participants in the workshop may be invited to attend the fifth annual NBER Conference in AI, which will be held virtually on September 23-24, 2021.

Applicants must have successfully completed the first year of their Ph.D. program. They should use this link

https://conference.nber.org/confsubmit/backend/cfp?id=YSAIf21a

to submit the following materials in a single PDF file by 11:59pm EDT on Monday, May 31, 2021:

• Contact information, including email address.

• A one page CV, including key coursework and major (and minor if applicable) focus of study.

• A maximum 300 word summary of the applicant’s interest in AI. This could include research already undertaken, links from current research focus on AI topics, or reasons for newly formed interest in the topic.

Applications from students who are members of groups that are under-represented in economics are welcome. Acceptance decisions will be announced by early July, 2021.

Questions about the application process may be
addressed to confer@nber.org; questions about the content of the workshop may be addressed to avi.goldfarb@utoronto.ca.

Postdoctoral fellowships with AINow at NYU

Joshua Gans

New postdoc opportunity in AI:

AI Now is looking for two to three postdoctoral researchers whose work resonates with the Institute’s mission. This position is an ideal opportunity for scholars who are interested in understanding the growing role of AI and related technologies within social and political institutions, and who are excited by the idea of shaping a new and far-ranging research field.

QUALIFICATIONS

Eligible candidates will have received their PhD in 2016-2018 (conferred by August 2018). Start date for this position will be September 4, 2018. Postdoc fellowships are two years in length and this position will conclude at the end of June 2020.

Successful candidates will have extensive research experience and an established research track record–demonstrated by journal publications and/or conference papers and other forms of academic participation, such as program committees and editorial boards.

Candidate may be trained in any discipline, but should be driven to better understand the social and economic implications of AI and related systems, and be interested in working in an interdisciplinary environment.

Examples of relevant research areas include: issues of bias and fairness in algorithmic systems, gender representation in AI, the implications of algorithmic risk assessment in criminal justice, the geopolitical implications of artificial intelligence, the ways in which AI and automation are shaping specific labor sectors and the nature of work, the history of artificial intelligence, and the political implications of machine vision. We are also open to a range of topics and approaches that go beyond these domains.

The ideal candidate will enjoy bold and creative research design, working on collaborative teams, mentoring junior researchers, exploring new methodologies, and engaging broad audiences with their research.

The postdoctoral fellowship program is located at New York University and candidates will be expected to spend the majority of their time on-site, with the exception of travel for conferences, research, meetings, etc.

NYU is an Equal Opportunity Employer and we value diversity; women, racial and ethnic minorities, persons of minority sexual orientation or gender identity, individuals with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply for vacant positions at all levels.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

The application deadline for the 2018-2020 class is Tuesday November 21, 2017 at 12:00 noon EST.

Feel free to contact us should you have any questions about the position at apply@artificialintelligencenow.com.
